Diversity: A Tool for Solving the Grand Challenges in Global Mental Health

On May 1-2, 2018, the NIMH Office for Research on Disparities and Global Mental Health (ORDGMH) and Grand Challenges Canada will co-convene the annual Global Mental Health Workshop to bring together global mental health researchers, innovators, and other stakeholders on the theme of “Diversity: A Tool for Solving Grand Challenges in Global Mental Health.” The workshop will highlight the importance of diversity in science along the research pipeline (basic, translational, clinical, and implementation science); in the global mental health research workforce; in the individuals who participate in mental health research (including youth, racial/ethnic minorities, women, sexual and gender minorities, and individuals with disabilities) and in the short, medium, and long-term time frames required for various research endeavors to improve clinical care.

The keynote and workshop session speakers will interactively engage with workshop participants on topics such as computational science, measurement challenges, mobile technology, research and policy engagement, implementation science, research capacity building and intersection for action across diverse communities.

To encourage and inspire future global mental health researchers, the workshop will host lunchtime roundtable discussions on both days for students, post-docs and early-stage investigators to interact with senior and mid-level investigators. These semi-structured discussions will allow for networking and knowledge exchange on mentoring, research career development, and research interests in global mental health.
